Let me begin by making it clear that I am not a big Metal fan. That being
said, the Deftones, a metal band, really caught my attention. Picture yourself
in your car, sitting in the middle of a road. On one side of you is a car with
the loudest stereo in the world, on the other side is a fast moving train, and
to top it off there is a jet liner parked right in front of you with it's
engines running. Pretty loud, huh? The Deftones were louder. Sometimes lost amid that brutal wall of noise was the fact that these guys have a knack for writing some good material, full of energy and life. Somehow, in a live setting, the Deftones inject even more energy into their music. In the middle of this thunderstorm of music, frontman Chino Moreno screamed and thrashed his way through the bands powerful set. It seemed at times as if his head would simply explode from the ferocity unleashed as he cut through the overwhelming force imbedded in the Deftones not so subtle sound. The other main factor that makes the Deftones enjoyable, yet extremely loud is the presence of guitarist Stephen Carpenter. In front of a screaming, blissful Palladium crowd, Stephen blazed through the evening spewing ferocious riffs with nightmarish speed and efficiency. The Deftones may be loud, but they make it work, and they make it look easy. And the opening intro., "Pimpf" by Depeche Mode, used to announce their presence, didn't hurt |
