Welcome to Off-Broadway featuring the Pet Shop Boys, complete with a cast of 5 costumed back-up singers and of course Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe. Throw in an "L" shaped stage and a bit of lighting and you have PSB '99, the most boring act in town. Not known for being an exciting act, the Pet Shop Boys managed to put everyone to sleep with 2 hours of disco tinged synthpop. The only real saving grace of the concert were the performances of the aforementioned back-up singers, whose frequent costume changes and silly stage antics brought some life to a show otherwise devoid of it. Only at the end, with hits It's A Sin and the finale Go West did the Pet Shop Boys and the Universal crowd seem to find some cohesive energy. The one major highlight was a tribute to Dusty Springfield. Using her original vocals to accompany Neil Tennant on What've I Done To Deserve This and showing footage of her from various performances seemed an appropriate way to say goodbye, to which Neil did with a kiss to her image to finish the song. Otherwise, with Chris Lowe anchored to his keyboards and Tennant rarely moving an inch, it was hard to know if you were watching them or a video. Either way, it was rarely exciting. |
