Soulfly
The Keyclub, Hollywood - November 1, 1998

Music to mosh by! Former Sepultura front man, Mike Calavera, has put together a kick ass group. Soulfly makes no excuses and takes no prisoners. Calavera's stage persona and raw, voice of death vocals are the focal point of this band but they all put on an energy charged performance that had the audience at a fever pitch throughout most of the performance. They opened with "Eye For An Eye" and that set the tone for one moshing good time. However, midway through the set, they shed the guitars and eveyone in the band and seemingly, everyone backstage picked up some drum sticks and worked out some Third World percussion rhythms on multiple drums brought out on stage. This was quite a departure from the thrashing power that had been the staple of the evening, but it was interesting and done just long enough not to be a turn off. By the end of the show Soulfly had invited some friends to join them. A couple of the Beastie Boys and the lead singer for the Dandelions joined the band onstage and chaos reigned on and off the stage. Soulfly closed the show with a song whose lyrics were not only profound but right on the mark, "Fuck Hootie & The Blowfish". It was very entertaining.
